Nongoma hosts vibrant ISUKILE community festival
Hundreds gather in Nongoma for a festival celebrating sport, arts, culture and community development.
Hundreds of residents, artists, cultural groups and sports enthusiasts gathered in Nongoma on May 30, for the ISUKILE Integrated Sector Campaign, a festival aimed at promoting sport, arts and culture across the Zululand District.
The event, hosted at several venues including King Bhekuzulu High School, Lindizwe Primary School and Nongoma Primary School, drew participants from all five local municipalities within the district.
Community leaders show their support
Nongoma Local Municipality Mayor, Mbekezeli Emanuel Zondo, together with councillors and other dignitaries, attended the festival to show support for initiatives focused on youth development, social cohesion and economic empowerment.
Colourful march through town
Activities began with a briefing session at the municipal offices before a colourful community march made its way through the town. The procession was led by Mntomuhle Khawula, alongside Mayor Zondo, councillors, athletes, cultural groups, maidens and community members, before concluding at King Bhekuzulu High School.
Arts, culture and talent on display
The school hosted an arts and crafts exhibition where local artists showcased their work, while talent showcases and cultural performances entertained spectators throughout the day.
Sporting activities reward participants
The MEC and municipal leadership also visited Lindizwe Primary School and Nongoma Primary School, where a variety of sporting activities were taking place. Prizes were handed out to participants before the festival concluded with a prize-giving ceremony for several sporting codes, including indigenous games.
Focus on youth and community development
Speaking after the event, Mayor Zondo thanked the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, schools, organisers, participants and community members for contributing to the festival’s success.
He said sport, arts and culture remain important tools for community development, social unity and economic growth, adding that initiatives such as ISUKILE provide valuable opportunities for young people while helping to preserve cultural heritage and promote healthy lifestyles.
