Vryheid parkrun marks 8 years of community
Vryheid parkrun celebrates its eighth anniversary with milestones, personal bests and community spirit.
Vryheid parkrun celebrated a major milestone on Saturday as participants and volunteers marked the event’s eighth birthday while also taking part in the global parkrun movement’s one millionth event weekend.
The celebration was filled with memorable performances, personal achievements and a reflection on the strong sense of community that has kept the local parkrun going for eight years.
Top finishers lead the celebrations
Siphethelo Thabede and Andile Ngcobo shared first place after crossing the finish line together, while Smangele Mnguni followed just seconds later to finish third overall and claim the top spot among the women.
Seventeen personal bests recorded
The event also saw an impressive 17 participants achieve new personal best times. Congratulations went to Arthur, Tahlia, Mfihlakalo, Juan, Ronnique, Deana, Keir, Nico, Cludet, Elisma, Cornelia, Isie, Ronel, Sonel, Natasha, Alta and Rebekah for their achievements.
Colin joins the 50 Club
Another highlight of the morning was Colin Mackay reaching his 50-run milestone, earning a place in the parkrun 50 Club.
Reflecting on the journey
As participants gathered to celebrate the anniversary, organisers reflected on the journey that began eight years ago. Since its launch, Vryheid parkrun has brought together runners, walkers, volunteers, visitors and supporters from across the community. Over the years, the event has weathered floods, challenges and even a global pandemic, yet it has continued to thrive.
Organisers said that while parkrun brings people together through exercise, it is the sense of belonging, friendship and community spirit that keeps participants returning week after week.
Honouring long-serving volunteers
The anniversary also provided an opportunity to recognise some of the volunteers who were present at the very first Vryheid parkrun event. Cameron, who served as photographer at the inaugural event, took part as a participant on Saturday. Sally, who was the first tailwalker, handled timing duties this year, while Daan, who originally worked as a timer, took on the role of tailwalker.
Smuts and Amanda, who also volunteered at the first event eight years ago, once again gave their time on Saturday.
Organisers paid tribute to all volunteers who have contributed over the years, describing them as the heart of Vryheid parkrun and the reason the event continues to flourish.
Looking ahead to the future
As the celebration came to a close, participants looked back on eight years of milestones, friendships and shared experiences, while looking forward to many more years of parkrun in Vryheid.
