Vryheid parkrun honours global Alphabet Challenge milestone
Vryheid parkrun celebrates 18 personal bests and an inspiring international Alphabet Challenge achievement.
Vryheid parkrun enjoyed another memorable Saturday morning, with strong performances, 18 personal bests and the celebration of an extraordinary international parkrun achievement.
Top performances lead the field
Lindokuhle Ngema claimed first place overall after another impressive run, while Smangele Mnguni once again finished as the first lady, crossing the line in fourth place overall.
A total of 18 participants recorded new personal best times. Congratulations go to Izelda Meyer, Lethokuhle, Mfihlakalo, David, Friedel, Zanele, Annelize, George, Wilhelm, Deana, Alicia, Cornelia, Ronel, Nompilo, Isie, Christoff, Manu and Chris on their achievements.
International challenge reaches a remarkable milestone
One of the highlights of the morning was celebrating Pauline Statham, who has officially completed her international parkrun Alphabet Challenge.
The challenge requires participants to complete parkrun events beginning with every available letter of the alphabet. Pauline travelled to parkruns in several countries around the world to achieve the milestone, with Vryheid parkrun proudly representing the letter “V” when she visited the event on a previous occasion.
To mark the completion of her challenge, Pauline had commemorative flags made featuring every parkrun that formed part of her journey and sent each event its own personalised flag. Vryheid parkrun was honoured to receive its flag, celebrating its place in Pauline’s remarkable achievement.
The Vryheid parkrun team congratulated Pauline on reaching her goal and thanked her for making the local event part of such an inspiring international journey.
New goals for local parkrunners
Participants who are inspired by Pauline’s accomplishment can also take on a variety of parkrun challenges closer to home. One of these is the parkrun Tourist Challenge, which is achieved by completing 20 different parkrun venues and earns participants the opportunity to purchase the orange parkrun Tourist cap.
Many other challenges can be tracked through the free parkrun app by selecting the ‘Extras’ tab and then ‘Challenges’, giving runners and walkers plenty of goals to work towards while enjoying their weekly parkrun.
