How to trick your mind into doing things it doesn’t want to

8 Steps to help you be the boss of your brain.

The human brain is a multi-layered, all encompassing marvel of biology.

It controls all our bodily processes, most of which are essential to keeping us alive. But it also controls the more intricate workings of our inner selves.

Hopes, dreams, fears and doubts – the human brain makes this all happen.

Every one of us have tasks on our to-do lists that we dread. How do you trick your brain into doing things that you really don’t want to?

Here are 8 steps you can use to be the boss of your brain:

1. Enter every new experience with an open mind. If you keep telling yourself that what you are about to do won’t be fun or productive, chances are, it won’t be. Visualise yourself having a good time and doing well, then have fun!

2. Find a buddy. Friends will encourage you and offer guidance when you stray from your self-motivated path. Do some research, read about people who have accomplished similar goals and use that to motivate yourself.

3. Play pretend. Fixing your home? Or your car? Imagine you are a TV show host and talk yourself through every step. Climbing the corporate ladder? Imagine yourself as a young Donald Trump, with success around every corner. Just remember to stop being Mr Trump at morning meetings!

4. Be satisfied, If you tell yourself that you will enjoy something, you will. Making up your mind ahead of time can be a tough trick to learn, but once you have the hang of it, it will help you in many situations.

5. See progress. Acknowledge your successes, and don’t be too hard on yourself when you fall short. Instead of looking at how far you still have to go, look at how far you have come.

6. Make progress. Visualise yourself being pulled closer to your goal. Let it compel you.

7. Distract yourself. If the bigger picture frightens you, break it down. For instance, if you are on a bicycle going up a big hill, count the pedal revolutions or concentrate on the movement of your body. Focus on an aspect of the task that will help you, not intimidate you.

8. Set a reward. Saw a pair of shoes you liked? Craving that piece of chocolate that your diet does not allow? Set yourself a goal, and once you reach it, have a reward for your hard work!

For some, it is easier than for others. The simple ability to be able to laugh in the face of adversity can be an invaluable life skill.

Saying yes, when you really want to say no, is part of taking the challenge of life by the horns and stepping up to the proverbial winners’ podium.
