After three years the Silver Falcons return to Newcastle, here's what they have to say to you.
Major Werner Vermaak is the squad leader of the Falcons. And although fatigue kicked in for a moment during the interview, when he seemed to forget where he was, Major Vermaak holds Newcastle very close to his heart. In 2012, Major Vermaak earned his falcon wings during his first show in Newcastle.
Originally from the ‘Friendly City,’ Port Elizabeth, Major Vermaak believed Newcastle could give the city a run for its money, as he believed the one thing he always remembered about the people of Newcastle was their hospitality.
Captain Jacques Poolman has been a pilot since 2002 and joined the Air Force in 2005. In 2008 he joined the Falcons and was a member of the flight crew who attended the Newcastle Airshow in 2012.
He advised residents to make sure to check out the mirror-mirror manouvere, as this was one of the most exhilirating moments of the show.
Major Shaun Constable is the self acclaimed ‘Baby Falcon,’ having only started flying with the group a month and a half ago. He admitted there was a lot of pressure flying with the group, but said it was a privilege to fly with them as well.
Captain Marc Bennet has been flying since 2005 and this is his second year as a Falcon. Make sure you watch his every move in the number two plane!
Captain Mark Gentles has been flying with the Falcons for three years now, and is the group’s designated soloist pilot.
Major James Wilcox is one of the senior pilots of the Falcons.
He is hoping that after seeing the Silver Falcons in action, some of Newcastle’s youth will join the Air Force, and one day become a member of the Falcons.
