South African desserts always seem to bring comfort and warmth to the weariest of hearts. Memories associated with these desserts are of the nostalgic kind.
Here are five classic South African desserts that will make you miss home almost instantly.
1. Milk Tart
This indigenous South African dessert is traditionally made with a biscuit or pastry base, filled with creamy milky goodness and topped with a splash of cinnamon powder; a simple hit to complete any meal.
2. Malva Pudding
A sponge-like cake with a sweet gooey sauce; what more can you ask for? This dessert is a showstopper to the most glorious of dishes.
3. Cremora Tart
We South Africans undeniably possess a sweet tooth. The main ingredient in this dessert is Cremora coffee creamer with a can or two of condensed milk, and a dash of lemon juice. It’s foolproof, and the star of any meal.
4. Koeksusters
A glistening heap of sticky dough fried goodness… This basic flour dough, braided together and deep fried, then immediately thrown into a sugary syrup, will have your mouth-watering before you’re even done frying up the first batch.
5. South African-style trifle
Originally made with thick cream flavoured with sugar, ginger and rosewater, the name trifle means three-ingredient dessert, and has evolved greatly ever since.
Nowadays, variations range from fruit to custard, jelly, nuts, coconut and even a small amount of alcohol for the more adult audience.
Among South Africans, this is the go-to dessert when entertaining larger crowds. Almost no-one can refuse this bowl of heavenly deliciousness.
