Shaun Frank – A legend in the making

Since childhood, Shaun Frank always knew soccer was his passion.

“I was about five years old when I knew this was my calling and would spend Sundays on the soccer field with my dad, so it’s in my genes,” he said.

Shaun was born in a suburb of Johannesburg, Bellevue, but relocated with his parents to Newcastle when he was two months old. Growing up, Shaun captained his primary school soccer teams, as well as his high school teams. His father played soccer for a local soccer club, Stella FC, so it was only destined that Shaun would excel in the world of soccer.

One of the proudest moments in his soccer career was when he was chosen to represent his province for two conseutive years and received his Northern Natal colours for soccer.

“I would say that gave me a boost in my soccer career.”

After school, Shaun went on to play Premier 2 League, which is semi-professional soccer, in Johannesburg. He took home awards for being Player of the Season, and for being supporters’ Player of the Year. He said what was most exciting about that time of his life, was that he got to play alongside and against some of the greats in the soccer industry.

Shaun said his most disappointing moments were when he was not accepted by professional soccer teams, because of his small physique.

“I was tiny compared to those players. It was disappointing, but I accepted it.”

After his stint in the City of Gold, Shaun returned home to Newcastle, where he joined the same club his dad once played for. He was introduced to Futsal, which is similar to outdoor soccer.

As his parents separated when he was quite young, he was brought up by his mother, and saw his father on weekends. Being raised by a woman didn’t make him less of a sportsman, as his mother always supported his love for soccer, thus creating a strong bond between mother and son.

His dad also supported him when he could, and would buy him his soccer gear when needed. Shaun concentrated on his sport, becoming the man many sport enthusiasts in Newcastle admire and idolise.

“I believe I am a role model to many young sportsmen. I try to mentor as many youngsters as I can, and I do believe I have made a difference in many people’s lives.”

When Shaun is not on a Futsal field, he is a respected salesman at a well-known enterprise in Newcastle.

Shaun is a dedicated husband and father of two daughters, regarded by him as his greatest achievement.

Shaun met his wife while they were in high school and said he always knew he would marry her.

“We have been married for 17 years and have the two most beautiful daughters together. They are my life and my most valued possessions,” he said with a smile.

Shaun explained playing Futsal or outdoor soccer required a lot of time, dedication and dicipline. The correct diet and exercise also played a very important role.

He advised young soccer players to follow their hearts, work hard and stay away from crime. They should never give up on their dreams and always strive to make it a reality.

“Be humble, have respect and never forget your morals,” he concluded.
