TBT – From Dundee Pre-Primary to Doctor Preben
Though he may have left to make a difference and help others, Dr Preben Maharaj always remembers where it all started

As the saying goes, it’s not where you come from but where you’re going that counts. Preben Maharaj is a prime example of this.
A former Dundee lad, Preben left the town at the age of 17 to study medicine in China. After six years of honing his skills there, Preben returned home and started an internship at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

Fast forward four years and Preben is now a doctor at the hospital, working in the Radiology Department. Despite being approximately eight hours away, Preben tries to come home every few months. “Home is Home.”
His family still reside in the area. Dad Dalip, owns Bunny’s Musical Centre on Willson Street and mum, Asha, is a teacher at Dundee Primary School. Family is very important to Preben and he has fond memories of time growing up. “Some of my best memories were when my brother Shamiek and I would kick the ball around while my parents gave us life lessons.”
Preben also has memories of Dundee Pre-Primary School.
“I remember Mrs Wessels and her guitar and how we used to have sing alongs. I think my fondest memory there was the first day my younger brother started and I remember walking him to school.”
Though he may have left to make a difference and help others, Dr Preben Maharaj always remembers where it all started.
