#TechTuesday: The top gaming titles of 2017 – so far

With the year winding down, let's look at the top contenders for the coveted position of the year's best gaming title.

End-year is an unusual period for gaming.

While the year isn’t quite over, many in the fraternity act like it is.

You’ll find developers holding back for the December holiday season release.

Magazines and websites are already working on lists of the year’s top games.

Even gamers have a little squirreled away for Steam sales and the like.

And who are we if not followers of the trends?

We’ve listed the top contenders for the top games of 2017 (by general consensus).

For the sake of conciseness, we researched top picks from a range of sites and sources.

This included a critic site, a news webpage, a pop culture meme machine and our own estimations.

Here are this year’s top gaming titles, by number of times listed:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (five mentions)

It’s hardly surprising to see this title topping numerous lists and articles.

BotW built on an already masterful series by making a jump to open world gameplay.

Small wonder BotW is our winner, and may top gaming lists for generations to come.

Horizon: Zero Dawn (four mentions)

A very close second, Horizon: Zero Dawn incorporates stealth elements into action RPG.

Gameplay is fluid and adaptable to an individual playing style.

Add in collectibles, a vast open world and you’ve got a gem of a game.

Persona 5, Injustice 2, Sniper Elite 4 (three mentions)

Second place is a three-way tie between titles which might have won any other year.

Playing out like anime brought to life, Persona 5 combines RPG elements, turn-based action and more.

It’s a bright yet gritty game.

Injustice 2 brings back old-school fighting with our favourite superhuman ‘finishers’.

Perfect if you want to unwind after a long day at the office.

Sniper Elite 4 is itself a masterpiece, showcasing just how the series has survived for over 12 years.

This latest addition to the series allows for play-your-way style – go stealthy or all guns blazing.

Honourable mentions

Each of these gaming titles received three votes and deserve recognition:

Nier: Automata, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Yakuza 0, Prey, What Remains of Edith Finch, For Honor, Nioh.
