Twistmas Carols – with apologies, sort of, to Shakin Stevens and Bing Crosby

Shakin Stevens and Bing Crosby pay tribute to Endumeni

“White Christmas” is a 1942 Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. The version sung by Bing Crosby is the world’s best-selling single with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. Other versions of the song, along with Crosby’s, have sold over 50 million copies.

There is now another version – with a local slant keen readers should recognise;

White Christmas

I’m dreaming of a bright Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the lights glistened and Eskom listened
To hear the children play in the evening light

I’m dreaming of a bright Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
I’m dreaming of a bright Christmas
With every candle I light

May your nights be bright and light
And may all your Christmases be bright
I’m dreaming of a bright Christmas,
Just like the ones I used to know
Before Eskom took our lights away
and made all Christmases all dark

Shakin’ Stevens, the 80s rock and roller, who made Green Door famous again, also did his bit for Christmas with a festive song, Merry Christmas Everybody, that was a hit in the UK. Not to be outdone, some Dundee folk have their own take on Stevens’s song:

Merry Christmas Everybody

Money is falling
From the sky
People are grabbin’ it
Having a ball

Greed sowing the seeds
Lovely money for everyone
Time to spend
Party all night

Dancin’ in the streets
No cops will stop us
Pockets full of notes
Gonna get me a flatscreen
And a top loader

Until that pyramid scheme collapses
All around us
Oh I hope it doesn’t
What a nice way to spend that money
Wish it was snowing pyramids everyday…
