Twistmas Carols – Good King Wenceslas

A carol for our abused public spaces

Dundee residents especially have this year had many long laments (and long sleepless nights too) about park parties, unruly behaviour in public and drinking in public.

While the authorities insist that the by-laws are in place, residents say these are simply not implemented. We turn to a much-loved carol to test the state of play in our parks:

Good King Wenceslas

Good King Cyril looked out
On many feasting
The KFC lay around, deep and oilyThe Heineken bottles shone green and bright
And the broken glass was cruel to the little one’s feet
Though the litter was thick and greasy
When a poor resident came in sight
To chase away the gathered flock
Yonder voter , who is he?
Does he live by the park?
Sire, he lives on McKenzie Street
Near the Hospital
Right against the bowling clubBring me meat and bring me expensive whisky
Bring me Blitz and wood
We will dine in this parkAnd bear him much pain
Turn up the music, page boy!
Forth the loud music and shouting went togetherAnd many lamented rudely, using Facebook and the
Courier to share their bitter comments
Through the rude winds, wild lament

Sire, the night is darker now
And the litter is blowing in the wind
Fails my heart, I know not how

I can no longer stand up, Thy Heineken has taken its toll
It is crashing through my blood, making me fall
And in his masters step he fell
Where the heaps of litter lay
Unmentionables were among that evil pile
And neither did not care about the neighbourhoodAnd the poor walked past, hurrying their way home
Without wealth or rank
and received no blessings from those intent on partying.
