Vryheid tests depth ahead of home semi-final
Young Vryheid players impress despite defeat ahead of next weekend's home semi-final.
This past weekend, the Vryheid Rugby Club travelled to Glencoe for a highly anticipated clash against Sentraal Rugby Club.
Sportsmanship before league points
The fixture had been rescheduled after Sentraal’s initial inability to field a team on the original date. Displaying true sportsmanship, Vryheid elected to play the rescheduled game rather than simply taking the default league points.
Having already secured an unassailable first-place position on the log and a guaranteed home semi-final this coming weekend, July 18, Vryheid used the fixture to rest several first-team regulars. This paved the way for a younger squad to take the field, presenting a golden opportunity for the up-and-coming players to put their hands up for future selection.
Young side rises to the challenge
The match unfolded as a typical encounter against a massive Sentraal outfit, who relied heavily on the brute strength of their forward pack. However, Vryheid’s forwards refused to back down, meeting the physical challenge head-on. Out wide, the sheer pace of the Vryheid backline was obvious from the opening whistle, though a frustratingly stop-start rhythm to the game made it difficult to build attacking momentum.
Focus shifts to home semi-final
After a gruelling 80 minutes, the young Vryheid side ultimately came up just short, with Sentraal claiming a 33-21 victory. Despite the loss on the scoreboard, the younger players proved their mettle in a deeply physical contest, leaving Vryheid in a strong position as they prepare for their upcoming home semi-final.
