‘Being Bold means being a light to others around you’

Mo Hwande who grew up in the small town of Vredefort describes her journey to the crown as one of immense growth and self-discovery.

“I am still soaking in every emotion — gratitude, joy, and the deep knowing that with great purpose comes great responsibility,” says Mo Hwande, after being crowned Mrs Bold 2025 at Gold Reef City on Saturday.

Hwande, who also holds the title of Mrs Africa Universe Transcontinental, will represent Africa at the Transcontinental Pageant in Atlanta, USA, in October 2026 — a dream come true for the young mother of two who grew up in the small Free State town of Vredefort.

Her journey to the crown began in March, and she says it has been one of immense growth and self-discovery.

“Throughout my time as both a semi-finalist and finalist, I have learned lessons that will continue to shape my life,” says Hwande, who now lives in Johannesburg with her family.

In an interview, she expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported her through votes, donations, event attendance, and encouragement — including her former teachers from Vredefort and Parys.

“I couldn’t have done it on my own,” she said.

Lessons in Purpose

For Hwande, one of the biggest lessons from her journey is that true impact is not about numbers, but about the difference one makes in people’s lives.

“Purpose is not only what we do, but what happens to others because of what we do — a reminder that being bold means being a light for others,” she explains.

She also reflected on her campaign to combat period poverty, during which she ran 90km to raise awareness.

“You serve with joy when you use what you have and what you love to uplift others. That experience proved that passion, purpose, and impact always have a place,” she says.

“Every dream is valid. All it takes is audacity and what I call ‘crazy faith’ — the courage to believe in yourself even when your circumstances, or others’ opinions, say otherwise.”

Looking Ahead

“Standing proudly as Mrs Bold 2025, I’ve come to see that being bold is a choice — a choice to say yes to yourself, to life, and to purpose; to take up space and to allow yourself to be seen and heard,” says Hwande.

Her mission for the year ahead is clear: to make a meaningful impact, particularly in fighting period poverty.

“That mission holds a special place in my heart.”

“As someone who once experienced the silent shame of not having sanitary pads, I want to ensure no girl misses school because of it.”

” Every girl deserves dignity and opportunity,” she adds.

Beyond her advocacy work, Hwande is passionate about growing her fitness and wellness brand, CarryFit, which aims to empower women to move their bodies with confidence, strength, and self-love.

She also plans to reignite her public speaking career as an MC, keynote speaker, and panelist, drawing on her experience as an award-winning Toastmasters International speaker.

“Ultimately, my deepest desire is to be a source of hope and inspiration — a reminder that dreams delayed are not dreams denied – and that with faith, courage, and consistency, purpose always meets preparation.” Follow Mo on social media – @fit_mohwade and @mrs_bold_pageant
