75% of registered parties to contest in Local Government Elections

South Africans will cast their vote on November 4 in tghe Local Government Elections.

More than 7 in 10 registered political parties are contesting the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Of the 732 political parties registered at various levels, 546 have nominated candidates to contest the 2026 elections. That means 75% of registered political parties in South Africa are contesting these elections.

Participation includes parties registered at national, provincial, metropolitan and district levels.

The Electoral Commission is continuing with the statutory processes required to finalise the candidate lists, ensuring that nominations comply with the legislative requirements.

The final lists of candidates will be made available on September 16.
