Selection starts for SA team for ICF World Marathon Championships

Gauteng hosted the marathon championships for K1 and K2 racing canoes at Germiston Lake on the weekend of 8 and 9 May 2021. Victoria Lake Canoe Club presented the event. The Single Kayaks (K1) raced on Saturday, but the race was called off before finishing due to the lightning alarms. The Double Kayaks finished their 21+ km race on Sunday. Sylvia Nel, a paddler based in Parys, partnered with Michelle Haskins for the marathon doubles event.

They finished their race as Second Masters in two hours and nine minutes. Marathon races always include portages (with exceptions based on specific ages) as per the ICF (Inter- national Canoe Federation) World Marathon Championship requirements, Paddlers have to smoothly and efficiently get out their boats a few times and carry them over a short distance before getting back into the water to effectively continue their race. The team to represent Gauteng at the upcoming South African Marathon Championships will be selected on the results from the event which takes place in the Western Cape from 21 to 23 May 2021.

A South African team will be identified to represent SA at the ICF World Marathon Championships later this year.
