SASOLBURG. – Zamdela Police are warning motorists using routes 59 and 82 (the R59 and R82) against hijacking in that area.
Motorists are targeted by an unmarked white vehicle that flashes its lights at motorists from behind. When the drivers pull over, they are hijacked. The most common routes are the R59 between Sasolburg and Vereeniging and R82 between Koppies and Vereeniging, as well as the exit to the R57 from Sasolburg and the exits to the R59 at Vaalpark. Police urge all road-users and members of the public NOT to stop if anyone with a blue light or an unmarked vehicle, tries to pull them over. They should rather immediately contact police and drive to the nearest police station or safe place. Stopping is not safe and almost always leads to hi-jacking. Motorists should not pick up hitch hikers, especially if they are two or more. Do not pick anybody up at intersections or hi-jacking hot spots. Also avoid stopping for vehicles that have “broken down.” Rather contact the authorities to investigate or assist.* For more information, the community can contact the Sasolburg Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding Unit at 016 974 6117 or 082 455 6172.
