Against all odds and with little more than courage in their hearts and dreams in their stride, a group of ten determined learners from Ntshwephepa Primary School

have taken the local cross-country scene by storm.

This is the school’s first year participating in cross-country running — a bold step for a team with no formal training background, no access to professional gear, and often no

running shoes that fit. Yet, these young athletes have already made their mark by being selected to represent the Fezile Dabi region at the prestigious AFS TOP-20 Inter-Region

Championship, taking place on 28 June at Koedoeslaagte, situated in the scenic Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site.

What makes this team truly remarkable is not just their physical improvement after only four official races, but the spirit in which they run. Many of them come from underprivileged

homes, where basic needs often outweigh sporting dreams. Most began running in borrowed or worn-out shoes — some with no proper shoes at all. But nothing has slowed them down.

“They run with heart,” said one of their teachers. “They run for hope, they run for pride, and they run for a better future.”

Despite the challenges, six of the ten athletes have already achieved qualifying times for the Free State Championships — a feat that would be impressive even for seasoned runners with access to top equipment and coaching.

Ntshwephepa Primary School extended heartfelt thanks to the local cross-country community and individuals who have donated second-hand running shoes, making a visible difference in the lives of these aspiring athletes.

“Their journey is only beginning, but they’ve already shown the entire region what’s possible when determination meets opportunity,” said the school principal, Mr. Moloantoa.

The school invites anyone in the community who wishes to support the team — especially by donating new or used running shoes — to get involved and help fuel the dreams of these

rising stars.
