Wolves at the Gate is a Christian metalcore band that uses a mix of hard-hitting music and powerful lyrics to get their message across. They are truly one of the most versatile bands on the scene and never fail to disappoint their fans. The band consists of Steve Cobucci (clean vocals, guitar), Ben Summers (bass, backing vocals), Nick Detty (unclean vocals) and Abishai Collingsworth (drums).
Honourable mentions: East to West, Flickering Flame, Heralds.
5. Man of Sorrows
This song is a perfect example of Wolves at The Gate at their absolute best as they use their music to retell powerful stories. In this song, Jesus Christ’s crucifixion is the main topic with some beautiful lyrics that represent this ultimate sacrifice from the Man of Sorrows: ‘Bleeding, dying words were few, forgive them all for what they do. Gasping breath they heard Him say It is Finished.’
The song also has a fantastic melodic element to it as the lead guitar part moves the song forward until it reaches an exciting climax. The blend of Cobucci’s clean vocals and Detty’s screams are done perfectly on this song.
4. Asleep
‘Asleep’ is one of Wolves At the Gate’s newer songs found on their album, Types and Shadows and focuses specifically on humans’ lack of spiritual awareness. This is a song written in a different way than most of their other songs and looks at despair and the ability to come out of that dark place.
The chorus is one of the band’s best works as it soars into action with ‘Come now my darling, come now beloved, My Love it calls you.’ Detty and Cobucci once again combine here to great effect as they sing in perfect harmony.
The song also ends on such as an important note as redemption and God’s ability to provide second chances are perfectly illustrated with the lyrics: ‘You know how far I fell. You saved my soul from hell.’
3. Safeguards
The soft guitar rhythm sets this song into motion before Cobucci sings some powerful words, ‘Still, I’ll sing how great Thou art’ before the chorus kicks in.
This song focuses on the ability to praise and worship the Lord even though we, as humans, go through difficult times.
‘You will not abandon me when this body sees decay. Grace and peace have made a home in this heart that it will stay’. This is definitely one of my favourite songs, mainly because of the different elements in not only the musicianship but the potent delivery of the lyrics as well.
2. Relief
‘All who are burdened and sick and hopeless, come now and find your rest.’
This is another encouraging song from Wolves at the Gate that begins with a spoken word before the song starts with a true explosion as Cobucci and Detty sings the chorus at full voice. Collingsworth’s drums are also worth mentioning.
This is one of the band’s best inspirational songs where the fantastically written lyrics explain the relief from sorrows, grief and pain and ultimate rest found in Christ.
1.Dead Man
This is the best Wolves At The Gate song, in my opinion, mainly because it has a fantastic message that anyone can understand and find comfort in. The track tells a powerful story of a murderer who found Christ and was forgiven for his sins. ‘I was once a dead man, a stranger with no hope. I stood opposed.’
The vocals are also perfectly delivered with melodic harmony and passionate intensity that truly tell the power of God’s redemptive abilities.
‘Dead Man’ is just another illustration that God’s message can be carried out in any type of music and has the power to reach anyone.
