The band’s first full-length album Indefinite via was released in 2015. By then, they had already become an international touring act. Taking things into their own hands, their new EP, True Blue was released in 2018. Brigades is one of those post-hard-core bands that catch your attention with their superb vocals, slick guitar work and an impeccable ear for melody.
The band consists of Darren Young (vocals), Eric Morgan (guitar), Ricky Canter (guitar), Dom Docar (bass) and Jacob Wright (drums).
5. Sucker
This new track from Brigades off their EP, True Blue takes the band into a new direction with an emphasis on frenzied guitar work and pulsating drums that mesh well with Young’s superb melodic vocals. Young has some of the best vocals in the genre and on ‘Sucker’ he shows this off perfectly as he sings about lost love and being fooled into thinking that the persons near to him truly cared. The lyrics are sharp, catchy and bring something different to the table.
‘Thought you knew someone.
Had it all figured out. What started out as fun, turned to rile in your mouth. How’d you learn to make me feel so jealous? Overbearing and overzealous. Cause it’s not in the books that you read, Or your obsession with listening to Coheed.’
The chorus also emphasises this perfectly with ‘I’m such a sucker for anything that you do, that you say, all the games that you play.’
4. The Difference
The hard-hitting drum intro and accompanying guitars get this song off to the best possible start. Then Young lets his vocals do the talking with some fantastic lyrics: ‘This is not the way it’s supposed to be. I thought that we were family, but the time has come to figure out where the difference lies and see the world through honest eyes.’
The track has some really tasty riffs and licks and moves together at a good pace, never boring the listener with any monotony.
3. Crocodile Tears
The punk number has all the makings of a straight up banger from the start of the first notes and frenetic drumbeats. Wright’s drumming must be commended on this track as he builds a solid foundation for the song. The dual guitars from Canter and Morgan are also blissful to the ear as their stop-start riffage gives the track some extra spice.
The best of the song lies in what happens in the bridge and beyond at the 2:43 mark, as everything slows down until Young delivers some emotional screamed lyrics to match the intensity of the message: ‘Fingers bruised, Yellows and blues. Fastened with fathom in truth. I left home and found new shoes. I tried to wash the red from your hands, with romance. I tried to wash the red from your hands. There’s no chance. You’ve earned your strife upon other men’s blood. Go shed your crocodile tears in the mud.’
2. Running Blind
A sultry guitar lead accompanied by a smooth drumbeat on the snare rim begins this song. It has a great array of time changes and fantastic changes between softer and harsher sounds.
This emotional, personal track is one of Brigades’ best songs and takes an introspective look at hardships and how to overcome them, even at their worst.
‘We try to live beyond our means. While we’re tearing at the seams. They say I’m down to nothing. I tell them come what here may. To me, it feels like something,’ sings Young.
One of the best parts of the track is how the pace shifts and this is one of the best aspects of Brigades’ music.
1. Small Time Crooks
The opening guitar riff on ‘Small Time Crooks’ is simplistic but, in essence, it works perfectly on this fantastic number.
The chorus is the highlight with some high vocals showing Young’s vocal capabilities to a tee.
The lyrics: ‘I’ll pour it out to you from rooftops, I’m not afraid. It’s an anthem of embezzled love.
We’re thieves in our own way,’ showcase the band’s ability to string together different lyrics in a poetic mash of concepts.
The guitar breakdown in the bridge is another great aspect of this track and adds something different to an already brilliant song.
