“Ooh Shucks!” Two Dj’s has made success
Thato Rantekane (DJ Ooh Shucks) and Smangaliso Mabaso (DJ Stavo-SA), two North-West University alumni, have turned their trials into triumphs.
In a heartening tale of resilience and creativity, two North-West University (NWU) alumni, Thato Rantekane (DJ Ooh Shucks) and Smangaliso Mabaso (DJ Stavo-SA), are making waves in the music industry, demonstrating that even the toughest obstacles can lead to remarkable achievements.
A story of redemption
Thato Rantekane, known in the music world as DJ Ooh Shucks, began his journey at NWU in 2017, pursuing a BA in Public Management with Law and Politics. However, his academic progress was derailed when his passion for music and deejaying took precedence. “I lost concentration academically because my attention was more focused on music,” Rantekane admitted. His situation worsened to the point where he had to drop out in 2019.
Despite the setback, Rantekane’s determination never wavered. After a year of working at an internet café and later as a junior manager at Carltex Canal Crossing, he was offered a chance to return to his studies. “Receiving the news from the university that they were willing to assist me was a turning point,” Rantekane said. He resigned from his job, returned to NWU in 2022, and, with help from his former hostel parent and various university departments, continued his academic journey.
New beginnings and musical synergy
It was during his final year at NWU that Rantekane crossed paths with Smangaliso Mabaso, also known as DJ Stavo-SA. Both share a deep passion for music, particularly deejaying, and their collaboration began almost immediately. “Meeting DJ Stavo-SA was like finding a missing piece,” Rantekane shared. The duo quickly became a powerhouse, hustling for gigs and creating music together. Their first joint album, Mkhatshwa no Mofokeng, has been eagerly anticipated by fans.
DJ Stavo-SA, who initially sought guidance from DJ Ooh Shucks, reflected on their partnership: “Finding DJ Ooh Shucks was fortuitous. He was exactly the collaborator I needed for my musical journey.”
A new chapter: Amapiano Friday and album launch
In 2024, DJ Ooh Shucks, alongside DJ Stavo-SA, is set to host the “Amapiano Friday” event, designed to cater to students of color who felt underrepresented in NWU’s social events. “Amapiano Friday is a product of collaboration and transformation policies at NWU, and it’s heartening to see it come to life,” Rantekane stated.
The duo’s debut album, Mkhatshwa no Mofokeng, was launched on 26 July 2024, at Draakenstein. The album gave a fusion of innovative sounds and left a lasting impact on the music scene. “This album is a culmination of years of hard work and dedication,” DJ Stavo-SA explained. “It’s a celebration of our journey and a testament to perseverance.”
A Message of Inspiration
The story of DJ Ooh Shucks and DJ Stavo-SA serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration. DJ Ooh Shucks encourages aspiring artists to explore different musical styles and venture into new sonic territories. “Music is an endless journey. We invite everyone to join us in discovering new sounds,” he said.
DJ Stavo-SA adds, “Follow your dreams and recognize your talents. Your dream might just be the key to opening doors for others.”
