A family from Mieder Park are eternally grateful for their mother, Diedrika Jacoba du Plessis, who celebrated her 101st birthday on Friday (11 February).

Unlike her 100th birthday, the family decided to keep it intimate this year.
Diedrika, who is known for being extremely hard-working, worked as a seamstress until she was 99 years old. “She really enjoyed her job and made tons of dresses for people over the years. If it wasn’t for her falling ill after turning 99, she’d still be working,” Hettie Swart, Diedrika’s daughter shared.

Her family explains that she was a fairly healthy person and extremely active. “She was forced to slow down when she was hospitalised in June 2020 and she’s been bed-ridden ever since. Her daughters, Hettie Swart and Monica du Plessis look after her,” Linda du Plessis, Diedrika’s daughter-in-law explained.

Although Diedrika’s health isn’t currently at its best, the longevity gene isn’t a surprise to the family as both Diedrika’s siblings surpassed the age of 95.
“One of her sisters reached 100 while another also recently turned 90. We are truly blessed,” Linda added.

Diedrika was married for 53 years before her husband passed on in 1995. She has four children, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; soon to be eight.
“We are so grateful for her life and all she has done for us. We pray she has a long and painless life ahead of her,” Hettie added.
