Chaos as municipal telephone lines suspended
"Who do you call when there is a fire?" councillor Werner Van Onselen summarizes the extent of the problem.

The municipality communicated today that their Telkom lines are not working and that incoming calls have been affected due to this problem.
The Telkom lines have been suspended due to non payment.
According to ward councillor Heinricha Hodgson the suspended Telkom lines caused chaos over the weekend. “People called us (ward councillors) and then in turn we had to call the municipal officials to address the problem.”
Werner Van Onselen, a councillor within the municipality stated that troubles with the lines started on Wednesday, 20 March.
“Large parts of Miederpark and Suiddorp had no electricity. We started calling the officials directly to have these issues resolved. On Thursday MC Roode, Dagbreek and Mooivalleipark had no electricity. This (suspended lines) makes it hard for us. Councillors have now become a switchboard for residents,” said van Onselen.
According to him the situation is cause for concern as it is the essential services municipal lines that cannot receive incoming calls. “Who do you call when there is a fire?” a worried Van Onselen asked.
He added that councillors are not informed on the working schedule of officials and that officials were bothered on their weekend off.
Heinricha further commented that the situation was shocking and unacceptable.
The municipality could not be reached for comment regarding the situation.
