Widespread sewage spillage in Potchefstroom due to municipal negligence

Yet, no tangible progress has been made, exacerbating the crisis.

The DA calls for an urgent meeting with the municipal manager and executive mayor of JB Marks Local Municipality to address the widespread sewage spillage in Potchefstroom.

The municipality must take immediate action to install the repaired pumps at the Botha Street pump station and fast-track the long-overdue pipeline upgrade to prevent further environmental and health risks.

The failure of the ANC-led JB Marks Local Municipality to maintain and upgrade critical infrastructure has resulted in a growing sewage crisis. Neglected stormwater drains, failing sewerage pipelines, and the non-optimal functioning of the Botha Street pump station have created severe risks for residents. Despite repeated commitments, the municipality has failed to upgrade the pipeline leading to the Botha Street pump station.

This project has been included in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for several years, with funds allocated in the municipality’s annual budget. Yet, no tangible progress has been made, exacerbating the crisis.

Most recently, the DA received information that the pump station is operating with only one pump. Two pumps have been repaired but remain uninstalled due to nonpayment of service providers. This blatant negligence further highlights the municipality’s failure to address critical infrastructure issues, leaving residents to suffer the consequences. The consequences of this neglect are dire—sewage is overflowing into streets, residential areas, and public spaces, threatening public health, environmental sustainability, and local businesses.

The municipality’s failure to act, despite clear budgetary provisions, raises serious concerns about accountability and governance. The DA will not stand by while Potchefstroom residents suffer due to municipal neglect. We demand immediate action and accountability to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.

The local municipality was contacted for comment, but by the time of publication, no feedback was received.
