With the coming municipal elections in Tlokwe on 3 August, political advertising will be the order of the day as different political parties put up election posters to lure and attract potential voters. However, Mr William Maphosa, Tlokwe City Council spokesperson says there is a set of important rules and regulations that all political parties should consider in this type of political advertising.
“The Electoral Act requires that the council must allow all political parties to put up posters and advertise their messages as part of their election campaigns. Current council by-laws allow each party to erect no more than 1500 posters plus 300 posters for each candidate in each ward. Political parties need not make a specific application to council to put up posters. They may be erected as from the date on which the election date has been announced in the Government Gazette,” he said.
Maphosa highlighted that posters must be mounted on a sturdy background material and may only be affixed to street lamp posts with wire or cable ties.
He warned that each party must have removed all their posters within 21 days after the elections failing which council can impose a fine.
