Madibeng School achieves second position in the nationals

Learners of Madibeng Primary achieved the second position in the recent national finals of the Y-Cap (Youth Citizens Action Programme) awards in Pretoria.

Learners of Madibeng Primary achieved the second position in the recent national finals of the Y-Cap (Youth Citizens Action Programme) awards in Pretoria.

Throughout the year, these community-driven learners encouraged the community to read and, at this year’s finals, they focused on a literacy promotion project.
This was the second consecutive year that the school flew the North West flag high as runners-up. Last year, their focus was on the shortage of school textbooks.
While Mr Ananias ‘Makanaki’ Mmolai, the school’s mentor, said he was happy with the outcome, he added that he hopes the school will be crowned the national champions next year.
He thanked the Potchefstroom Herald and its management for the support they gave the school, Aganang local community radio station for helping them promote their theme of ‘reading’, Ikageng library staff and the taxi rank manager Mr Menzi. “This would not have been possible without your support,” he said. According to Amanda Blankfield-Koseff, CEO of Empowervate Trust, Y-Cap is a programme that encourages learners to find creative and innovative solutions that address social, environmental and academic challenges in their schools and communities.
“The programme has been run by an NGO, Empowervate Trust in partnership with the Department of Basic Education for the past seven years,” she said.
She says the National Y-Cap primary school winners are Isibukosabasha Primary from Dundee, a rural area in KwaZulu-Natal, for their project on health and safety. This included making their school taxi transport safer, their kitchen more hygienic and saving water by reusing the water used for washing hands for other purposes.
“The teacher’s award for the best mentorship role for the Y-Cap teams in the primary schools’ category went to KwaZulu-Natal and North West,” she said.
