An unsuspecting police officer became a victim of fraud after his payslip was fraudulently used to purchase lounge suites worth R11 000 at one of the furniture shops in Ikageng.
According to Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Const. Kelebogile Trom, a 32-year-old woman and 32-year-old man who are both employees of the furniture shop have been arrested for fraud.
Trom says the store manager only recently realised, after double-checking the account of the customer who received the furniture that she was not an SAPS member of staff. The lounge suite had already been delivered to an address in Khuma hostel near Stilfontein on 31 March this year.
“The manager says an SAPS pay sheet was attached to the woman’s application form, together with a copy of her ID. She suspected something was wrong because, when someone opens an account, that person has to submit three pay sheets.
“It is alleged that the two employees also committed fraud on 15 March this year when they sold a home theatre system worth R8 499 and a Sinotec 40-inch LED television worth R6 999.
The manager checked the records and could not locate the copy of an ID or the payslip of the customer the two suspects claimed to have sold the furniture to.
The customer, whose name appears on the application form, claims he does not have an account with the store and brought in an affidavit, in which he stated, under oath, that he has never opened an account with the retailer.
“The lounge suite’s couches were returned to the store earlier recently but the home theatre system and the television are still missing,” Trom said.
