At 4 Artillery Regiment’s annual gunners’ memorial recently, gunners remembered their fallen comrades-in-arms who displayed heroism, sacrifice and selflessness.
The parade coincided with Armistice Day which is commemorated worldwide every year on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – the signing of the ceasefire between the allied forces and Germany in 1918. It was also to remember the fallen soldiers of the war.
Chaplain T.J Moleele delivered a message of comfort and told the audience that as ‘a mother comforts her children, let God comfort us… keep comforting us, especially the family that cannot get used to their loss. Even in their deaths, they still remain gunners. Let us always stand next to our guns with pride,’ he said.
Thereafter, the acting officer commanding for 4 Artillery Regiment, Maj. Hendrik Abrahams delivered a moving eulogy in honour of the brave, fallen men and women. ‘If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy… be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow… perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.’ The proceedings continued with three cannons simultaneously discharging fire (first salvo), a two-minute silence, and a second salvo, concluded by a reveille.
Lastly, the uniformed members; the executive mayor, Kgotso Khumalo and Mrs Dawn Guqa participated in a wreath-laying ceremony. They all laid wreaths on the memorial.
