Ventersdorp protest march suspended

Khuduga Dibe, the community leader in Ventersdorp, says the Ventersdorp community has decided to suspend the protest march and rather focus on the mayoral imbizo that was held on Sunday, 7 May and the meeting with the Cogta (Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs) ministerial delegation on Thursday, 11 October.

He says they will decide which route to take after getting clarity from Cogta about the merger. ‘We are determined to defend Ventersdorp and its communities,’ he said.
Dibe added that the community was happy to have met the executive mayor, Kgotso Khumalo, though they are still not clear about how matters of service delivery and job creation will be addressed. ‘NW405 won’t employ all of us and, therefore, we need to know what other employment plans are available besides the municipal vacancies.
‘The mayor has also committed to ensuring sustainable services within a year but we are not sure whether he means this year or the next financial year,’ he said.
In previous Herald reports, Khuduga was quoted as saying that the Ventersdorp residents would march to demand the reversal of the merger of Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp if the executive mayor and the Cogta minister fail to honour their request to provide answers to the dilemmas the community is facing.
