‘Backache’ is a very broad term and is sometimes poorly defined as it has many possible causes. Some doctors believe that many cases are psychological in origin. These cases may result from emotion or stress-related problems. Other causes include poor posture, improper footwear and walking habits, improper lifting, slouching and sleeping on a worn mattress.
Medical causes include kidney and bladder problems, female pelvic disorders, arthritis, rheumatism, bone disease, a slipped disc or abnormal curvature of the spine. Fractures are less often the cause of back ailments. Most back problems are associated with long-term habits. If the pain is persistent after three days or radiates into the legs, seek medical advice.
There are several nutrients that are helpful in the management of back pain. Calcium and magnesium need to be taken in the correct balance and preferably in food-based form to assure assimilation into the bone complex. A multi-mineral complex with vitamin A and E is important in muscle and bone metabolism, while vitamin B12 aids in calcium absorption.
A protein supplement containing free-form amino acids is essential for bone and tissue repair and is helpful in the sense that degrading bone and tissue can cause inflammation and contribute to back pain. Cod liver oil contains vitamin A and D which aids in healing, while vitamin D is also necessary for calcium uptake. Another overlooked supplement is bromelain. Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple juice and in the pineapple stem. It is used to reduce swelling (inflammation) after surgery or injury. This enzyme digests the proteins responsible for inflammation.
A combination of B vitamins is needed for repair and to relieve stress in the back muscles. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids is needed for the repair of tissues and relieves tension in the back area.
It is important to see a doctor for a supervised exercise programme. A lack of exercise may also be the cause of back pain. Never lean forward without bending the knees. Lift with the legs, arms and abdomen – not with the small muscles of the back. Take care of your back and it can support you for many more years to come!
