Rape incidents in Ikageng continue to soar after six more cases were reported in the past few days.
According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the police spokesperson, a 31-year-old woman alleges that her 36-year-old husband raped her while the children were sleeping last Tuesday night.
‘She says her husband came into her room at about 21:30; they are no longer sleeping in the same bedroom. ‘The husband demanded sex and, when she refused, he forced himself on her. The woman says she could not scream for help as their kids were sleeping in the next room and did not want to traumatise them.
This was not the first time that he had done that to her,’ reported Trom.
In another incident, a 29-year-old woman was on her way home in the early hours of Sunday morning when two men approached her from behind, led her to a yard in the street and took turns raping her behind a toilet.
At about 02:00 the following morning, a 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a man who bought drinks for her and her friends at a pub. ‘According to the victim, the suspect asked her to accompany him to one of his friend’s house. On the way, he pulled her clothes off, assaulted her when she resisted and raped her.
The suspect was later arrested,’ said Trom.
Later, at about 07:30 that morning, a 27-year-old woman in Sonderwater was allegedly woken up by one of her three male friends who were sleeping over at her house. In another incident that dates back to 2015, a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped on her way from her mother’s house to Marikana, Promosa. According to the report, the young girl encountered a man who was standing in the doorway of his shack. He grabbed her and pulled her inside and raped her at knifepoint.
‘The victim did not report the case at the time because the suspect threatened to kill her. The girl says she has run into the suspect many times since then and he always threatens to kill her if she speaks out. The suspect has not been arrested,’ said Trom.
A case of rape is also being investigated in Potchefstroom after a woman was raped four times by two unknown suspects. According to Capt. Mvula Chaka, the police spokesperson, a woman was walking in Gaisford Street in the industrial area at around 07:00 on Sunday morning when two men approached her.
‘They demanded her cell phone which the readily gave to them,’ said Chaka. After that, they dragged her to a well-hidden place where they both took turns raping her.
According to Chaka, four counts of rape are being investigated although no suspects have been arrested as yet.
