A Girls’ High learner will represent South Africa at the 38th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition from 24 to 28 March.
The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists selected Reabetswe Maputle to take part in this prestigious event.
This 16-year-old Gr. 11 learner’s participation at the schools’ and regional Eskom Expos for Young Scientists during 2017 landed her this opportunity. This international event attracts students and teachers abroad to exchange their innovative ideas in science and technology.
According to the regional coordinator, Sethato Lydia Maputle, the bright young mind was selected to represent the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region at the national round at the Birchwood Hotel during last year’s October school holidays. Her science project was shortlisted for international interviews.
Reabetswe says her vision is to use science to address medical problems, especially in disadvantaged communities. Her project investigated dangerous pathogens found in borehole water that is consumed by people in the disadvantaged community and possible solutions.
Sethato says the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is South Africa’s primary and only existing science fair for school learners from Gr. 5 to Gr. 12. It is endorsed by the departments of Basic Education and Science and Technology. ‘It has established itself as a perfect vehicle for South African youth to demonstrate their inventiveness and innovation,’ she said. Furthermore, Sethato says it provides them with the opportunity to become original and innovative designers of scientific projects.
‘It affords learners the unique opportunity of showcasing their innovation and ingenuity through projects focused in the fields of sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI).’
She advises and encourages all learners in the above grades to make use of this opportunity.
