Mob justice served to suspected criminals: Police launch investigation

A group of community members assaulted a 22-year-old man with sjamboks, pangas, knobkieries and golf sticks.

The Ikageng police are investigating two cases of assault or grievous bodily harm (GBH) after two men were assaulted in Ext. 11 last Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
According to the police spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the first incident occurred last Thursday at about 02:30 when a group of community members dragged a 22-year-old man from his home into the street.
‘They accused him of robbing someone of R1 000.
They then assaulted him with sjamboks, pangas, knobkieries and golf sticks. Thereafter, they took him to his friend’s house, where they also assaulted his friend.
Both men sustained serious injuries and the police had to transport them to the hospital,’ said Trom.
In another incident that occurred on Sunday at about 16:00, Trom says a 30-year-old man alleges that a group of armed men stopped, searched and assaulted him on the street.
‘The man says they did not find anything on him.
However, one of them took out a plastic, burnt it, and placed it on his forehead and arm. He managed to escape,’ said Trom.
