The Bigg Pull truck challenge moves through Potch

This incredible initiative also has a charitable component, with each member of the team raising funds for charities across South Africa.

At the break of dawn this morning (Friday, 6 November) a power team continued their Big Pull truck-pulling national journey through the streets of Potchefstroom.

The Big Pull team sees a team of 20 men and women of all ages and cultures across South Africa combine to create one powerful unit that will aim to pull a massive truck for 1 671 kilometres from Centurion to Cape Town.

This will continue for 40 days testing their strength, endurance and teamwork along the way. One aspect that the team does daily is to kneel and pray to God before taking to the road for this epic challenge. They also visit communities and spread the Word.

The Bigg Pull is the brainchild of legendary South African strength athlete Wayne Price, better known as “The Gentle Giant”, who has spent more than four decades involved in strength sports, fitness, event promotion and sports leadership. He also did the previous Big Pull in 2003 where he led a team of 20 athletes in pulling a truck from Centurion to Cape Town in over 35 gruelling days.

23 years later and he is up for the challenge again with a new generation of eager men and women.

Price has an impressive CV having won South Africa’s Strongest Man competition in 1991 and reaching the final of the World’s Strongest Man competition in 1995. His achievements also include record-setting feats such as pulling an aircraft.

“The first Bigg Pull showed us that something extraordinary can happen when people commit to a shared goal and refuse to give up,” says Price.

“This time we want to take that spirit even further. Yes, it is going to test us physically, but the bigger story is about the people we meet, the communities we travel through and what can happen when South Africans pull together.”

It’s about coming together on one rope

The journey takes the Power Team through towns and communities across South Africa, with daily live broadcasts allowing the public to follow the athletes’ progress, challenges and milestones.

The initiative also has a charitable component with each member of the Power Team using their participation to support and raise funds for a charity of their choice.

The organisers hope the journey will inspire South Africans to look beyond individual achievements and recognise what can be accomplished through collective effort and perseverance.
