The police spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Trom says Samuel Taje (19), Thabiso Taje (19), Isack Shirinda (19), Johannes Jantjies (24), Thabiso Gawili (24), Lebogang Mokone (25), Samuel Monyeki (29) and Hendrik Jantjies (29) appeared in Potchefstroom Magistrates’ court on 18 March.

They were remanded in custody. She explained that the eight assaulted George in Sonderwater on 7 March.

“The police met with the victim’s father who informed them that his son had been brutally assaulted and admitted to the hospital. When they arrived there, they found George in Ward 3. He could not speak and had visible injuries on the head and face. He had stitches in his ear and he had a stab wound in his back. He passed away on 13 March,” she reported.

Trom says the police were initially investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but it was later changed to murder after the teen passed away.
