Abandoned baby starts school

Joyce Ntsizi of Ikhaya la Bantwana orphanage says she was very emotional when she dropped the 5-year-old off at school yesterday(15 January) morning. Sending one of her little ones to school filled her with so many emotions, she didn’t even know what to feel. “I just cried. Tears were just running down my face,” she said tearfully.

The 5-year-old was taken to the orphanage in 2015 when he was a 2-month-old baby. Since then, he calls Joyce his mother.

She says raising the young boy has been a pleasure. Just like some of the other children, he runs up and down and plays with them. He is a talkative, energetic little boy.

Joyce knows he will be all right at school as he didn’t even cry when they arrived. “When I took him to the class, I thought he’d cry when I turned around, but he didn’t.”

She hopes he will continue to go to school and become a successful young man one day. She also hopes that he will help other children in the future, too.

Kgomotso Mafoko, a community builder who has adopted the orphanage, says he, too, was proud to see the little one begin his school journey. Since 2015, Kgomotso has supported the orphanage and helps out where he can. He says he is happy and proud of how far the 5-year-old has come, despite his previous circumstances. “I know what he was when he was only a few months old and, now, look, he is a 5-year-old.

This shows me that anything is possible in life,” he said with joy.
