ALERT: Evacuation NWU-Mahikeng campus following violent incidents

The North West University (NWU), Mahikeng Campus, closed after the incidents of violence occurred last night (27 January).

The North West University (NWU), Mahikeng Campus, closed after the incidents of violence occurred last night (27 January).

The NWU management is extremely concerned about the violence on the campus. Following a call from the South African Union of Students (SAUS) to embark on a national shutdown of all universities, students were denied entry into the campus.

“A group of senior students assaulted other students and damaged university property,” said NWU spokesperson Louis Jacobs.

He said that the safety of the staff and students of the campus, is in jeopardy. As a result, they have decided to close the campus until further notice.

All students are requested to vacate the campus by today (28 January), at 15:00.

Due to the disruptive actions, Jacobs explains that several services such as the registration of first-year and returning students, and the assistance of NSFAS students who are waiting for financial clearance has been negatively impacted.

“We regret the inconvenience to all our stakeholders and reiterate our commitment to safety and a conducive environment for teaching and learning, research and engaged student life,” he said in a statement.
