A group of residents from Marikana are showing the compassionate side of the human spirit.
They have been going door to door to deliver food parcels for underprivileged households in their community during the lockdown.
Thembisile Tekani, a community activist and his friends, Themba Nelson Mthembo, Katlego Seleke and Tebogo Leemisa, are the driving force behind the initiative.
The group has been distributing food parcels since Monday, 30 March and plans to continue daily.
“We have provided for 12 households so far. I believe that over 100 households will benefit,” Thembisile said on Wednesday. This initiative was motivated by the 21-day national lockdown and aims to support families in need and provide food parcels for them.
Thembisile’s goal to provide for those in need is being reached with the help of farming communities and friends.
He and his friends collected the food donations last week and identified families that need the support the most during the past weekend.
At the moment, they distribute food to people in Marikana, but Thembisile hopes to extend the initiative to other informal settlements across the broader Potchefstroom. The rollout will be determined by the resources available, however. Tembisile stores the food in his home, but every morning, he and his friends load the parcels and start making the deliveries.
He says the feedback has been positive so far.
He thanks all who have made contributions.
