“It breaks my heart when I’ve given away the last food package and there are still more people to feed” These heartfelt words are of Kaylene Van Rooyen who took the initiative four years ago to help feed the homeless. At first, Kaylene started by cooking for the homeless over Christmas and Easter and eventually collaborated with an NPO in 2019, Kgatelopele Ya Bagodi which consists of a group of elderly women who give back to the community. Kaylene, who initially started the initiative to teach her son to always give back says she always felt like helping those less fortunate has always been her purpose. “My motivation came from Kgatelopele Ya Bagodi where women who only depend on SASSA grants still give back to the community,” she says. This year, Kaylene would love to feed at least 200 people. However, this year is different. Over the years Kaylene would spend money from her own pocket and collaborate with NPO’s however the COVID-19 pandemic has hit everyone extremely hard. “This is the first time I’m asking for help. It’s difficult this year because many are left without jobs and have no means of getting groceries,” she mentioned. Instead of monetary contributions she would greatly appreciate contributions in the form of food Kaylene is extremely grateful for the support she has received so far. This year she is looking forward to reaching out to more. To support or get more information about the initiative contact Kaylene on 071 320 1748
