Family distraught after pet is hit by car

Around 07:31 on Friday, 15 October, the Swarts family were getting their children ready for school when one of their dogs was run over.

“We had just opened the gate and were about to get the children onto the bus when one of our dogs went out of the yard,” Adré Swarts explained.
Moments later, there was a loud bang; their beloved dog, Star, had been run over.

“I was standing at the window to see what had happened. As my husband ran towards the scene, the driver of the car was already about to drive off,” Adré explained.
According to the Swarts family, the driver was extremely rude and defensive.

“He showed no remorse and even swore at us like it was our fault,” Ryan Swarts said.
According to the family, the driver is known for regularly speeding in the neighbourhood.
“At the time, the dog was still alive, I begged him to help me pick it up and take it to the vet, but he refused.

All this was happening in front of our children,” Ryan said.
“Although it was our responsibility to keep the dog in the yard, the way he reacted to the situation was completely uncalled for. What if it had been a child? He could have simply apologised,” Adré added.

The family say their children are completely distraught after the incident, especially their 12-year-old daughter, Shannon.

“She received the pup as a birthday present in March this year and she loved it wholeheartedly. She was hysterical when she saw what happened,” they added.
When Paws arrived at the scene, they confirmed that Star had died.

It all happened in front of them and they also had to witness the interaction between me and the driver.
They are traumatised and are going for counselling,” Ryan said.
