The School of Nursing Science (SoNS) at the North-West University Potchefstroom campus donated a lemon tree to the Mohadin clinic as part of their community care initiative.

Of all the clinics in Potchefstroom, the Mohadin clinic was awarded a certificate and a third lemon tree for best nurturing their trees.

The lemon tree challenge started in 2015 and 2018 when SoNS donated a lemon tree to several healthcare facilities in and around Potchefstroom. The second-year nursing students planted the trees at the clinics so the community could get free lemons.

The lemon tree project also forms part of the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI), as prescribed by the Department of Health.

According to the guidelines, warm water or weak tea with sugar/honey and a squeeze of lemon juice will help to treat a coughing child, soothe the throat and relieve the cough.

Anna-Therese Swart, a lecturer at SoNS, thanked the staff of Mohadin and the NWU students for their positive attitude and support of the project.
