Fireworks may seem like a great way to celebrate the New Year, but to an animal, it is one of the most disturbing times of the year, where panic and fear can set in.
Every year, Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society (Paws) does its utmost to patrol the streets in search of lost dogs or dogs who have fled the property.
This year will be no different, with volunteers being able to assist, too. Volunteers will only be able to help until midnight, though, due to lockdown curfew regulations.
“We have the necessary permits to be able to check for lost animals/pets due to the fireworks. We will also have a veterinarian on duty to assist with any injuries/anxiety that animals may experience due to fireworks,” stated Paws’ manager, Herman van der Sluis.
Van der Sluis also gave a few tips for owners to keep their pets safe during fireworks displays:
•Keep your pets secured in your home. Even dogs in fenced yards find ways to escape the scary sounds. •Give them a safe place to hide. Set up a comfortable room or crate in your house just for them. •Use ambient noise to mask the noise. A radio or TV playing soothing music works well. •Update their IDs and microchips. •Skip the celebration and stay home with them. Sometimes, your presence makes all the difference. •Keep them busy. Treat toys can help distract them during the display.
