Following the heavy rain that fell on Sunday afternoon (2 January), occupants in a bakkie got trapped on the flooded road between Promosa and Mohadin and residents were far from surprised.

According to Lefa Khumalo, who has been living in the area for close to 5 years says he saw this coming.

“We have been complaining about the infrastructure about that bridge for years now but our pleas have been falling on deaf ears, look what mess happened on Sunday,” he said frustrated.

“Why doesn’t the municipality simply hire qualified engineers?” he asked. Lefa says each time they bring up these issues, one is thrown with all sorts of excuses from the municipality “ The community must close that road and demand that it be attended to,” he lamented.

Lefa says it’s extremely fortunate that the occupants that were stuck in the bakkie were rescued but wonders if someone has to die before they are heard.

“They will always tell you about a budget they are required to adhere to yet this matter only continues to get worse,” he said.
