Illegal taxis still a point of contention

It is alleged that a group of taxi operators in Potchefstroom are forcefully taking control of illegal taxis without permits.

On Thursday, 6 January at approximately 16:20 the road on the N12 through Potchefstroom was blocked at the Nelson Mandela Drive and Beyers Naude crossing.

The traffic issue was allegedly caused by taxi operators who were forcefully removing passengers from illegal taxis. A few days later and the strike continues.

It is alleged that a group of taxi operators in Potchefstroom are forcefully taking control of “kokoroto taxis” – illegal taxis that are roaming town without permits.

Taxi operators who started an operation late last year and blocked routes in order to prohibit the kokoroto drivers, say they won’t stop until their ‘rivals’ are dealt with by authorities.

A driver, who forms part of the kokoroto drivers, says they tried reaching an agreement with the legal taxi drivers as they also have to feed their families but unfortunately, for them, none of their pleas have been heard.

It has been reported that last month, authorities, including MMC of public safety and transport Cllr Leon Mkhabela, tried to intervene by gathering with a handful of taxi owners with the aim of resolving the matter. Mkhabela had mentioned that they reached a solution.

However, community members are surprised that the issue is still ongoing.
