Disabled boy desperately needs donations

A Potchefstroom family has their backs against the wall and are desperately asking the community for help.

For 14 years, Natasha Vaalbank and her husband have cared for their disabled son, Delron, who suffers from hydrocephalus, dandy walker syndrome and cerebral palsy. His condition has left him with limited limb functionality and dependent on a feeding tube.

“It really pains my heart as a mother that we are at the point where we have to ask for financial help for the first time since Delron was born, but we honestly have no choice,” Natasha said. Although Delron was only diagnosed when he was three, the signs were there from the moment he was born.

“It’s been a very tough journey but I love my son, he is my everything and I want everything that is best for him,” Natasha added. Natasha, who is also Delron’s full-time caregiver, adds that one thing she never seems to get used to is having to take Delron to the hospital and having to see him hooked up to machines.

“He is fully dependent on me, I am his eyes and his voice and it kills me that we have reached a point where we need financial help to take care of him,” she said, trying to hold back her tears. “It’s extremely difficult to have to ask but we really need it.” Delron has outgrown his current wheelchair and needs a new one, which costs around R65,500. Unfortunately, the medical aid only covers a small portion of this.

“Apart from the wheelchair, we urgently need help with a pump for his mattress which costs R520, an advanced tube mattress, R1,322.50 and the consultation in Johannesburg to get a wheelchair, which costs R1,000,” Natasha explained.

“We know it’s a lot to ask but any form of donations will greatly help us.”
