Residents are disgusted by illegal dumping site

A resident of Bathoeng Street in Ikageng has had enough of the rubbish that continues to pile up opposite her home.

A resident of Bathoeng Street in Ikageng has had enough of the rubbish that continues to pile up opposite her home. She has been living in the street for over three years and says some of the residents have reported the issue, but nothing has been done about it.

“This site has been around for as long as I have been living here and this is the worst it has ever been,” she said. Another resident who has been living in the area even longer confirms that the site has been around for five years. According to them, people throw all sorts of things on the dump, including dead animals, and, over time, the smell becomes unbearable.

“What makes this even sadder is that even people who live around here contribute to this filth. I have tried reprimanding people where I can, but no one seems to care.” The resident stated that the only way he can live with the smell is by trying to avoid it but even that doesn’t help. “We have just learnt to accept it because people here are scared to speak,” he said.

The ongoing issue is of great concern to the residents who are forced to bear the stench of the refuse and unhygienic conditions daily. “It is high time the municipality fines people. We can’t continue living like this,” another resident added. The Herald asked the municipality for comment but had received nothing by the time of going to print
