Four years on, the Jantjie family is still left out in the cold after a Ford Bantam bakkie ploughed into their home while they were asleep in the early hours of July 2, 2018.

Since the accident, the family has been left with a shack built by the municipality and dried up cement intended to repair the family home.

The four-room home in Mashao Street, Ikageng, was in ruins after the accident and needed to be rebuilt from the foundation. The municipality, however, insisted that the person responsible for the incident was responsible for the damage caused.
Papas Jantjie, the owner of the home, said they had not heard a single thing from the person responsible.

“I am unemployed and don’t have the means to fix it,” he added. The Ikageng police investigated a case of reckless and negligent driving and driving without a licence. According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the police spokesperson, the 24-year-old driver of the car was arguing with his girlfriend when he lost control of the vehicle. The Herald asked the municipality for comment, but none was forthcoming in time for print.
