Two men sentenced for rape in Ventersdorp

"A swift response by the police enabled the police to find the cooldrink container which was taken to South African Police ( SAPS) science laboratory for forensic investigation and the results positively linked Kgomongwe who was unknown to the victims during the incident to the crime."

Two men were sentenced to 15 years and eight years imprisonment respectfully after being convicted of rape.

According to Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, provincial police spokesperson, Frank Kgomotso Mabaso (35) and Sello Papi Kgomongwe (25) were found guilty of rape which allegedly happened in May 2019 near Toevlug, Ventersdorp.

It is alleged that the duo raped two female victims aged 17 and 19 who were walking in front of them prior to the incident. One of them was carrying an 18 month old baby on her back. It is alleged that Mabaso and Kgomongwe forcefully took the victims into the bushes and ordered them to undress.

After raping the victims Kgomongwe allegedly took a cold drink that the infant had been drinking and finished it off. He left the bottle  before they fled the scene after tying the victims with their shoelaces. The victims managed to free themselves and went to report the matter to the police.

“A swift response by the police enabled them to find the cold drink container which was taken to the South African Police ( SAPS) laboratory for forensic investigation and the results positively linked Kgomongwe who was unknown to the victims during the incident to the crime,” says Malwetse.

Kgomongwe was arrested by members of the Family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit ( FCS) in Potchefstroom. Sgt Amogelang says upon interrogation he confessed to have committed the alleged crime.

Mabaso was sentenced to 15 years in February 2022 and Kgomongwe was sentenced to 8 years on the 14th March 2022 both for rape.
