Dumping site in Promosa keeps growing

The overflowing waste has left many residents complaining about the stench coming from the area.

It’s been months, and the illegal dumping site in Constantia Street in Promosa only seems to be getting bigger. The overflowing waste has left many residents complaining about the stench coming from the area.

Linda Jacobs, whose house is close to the site, said the waste poses a health hazard to the community. She suspects her sudden illness might be caused by the dumping. “I have been living here for almost a year, and I walk past the dumping site every day on my way to work,” she explained. “I am naturally a very healthy person, but I have recently been struggling with shortness of breath, and I suspect the site is the cause.”

According to her, people dump anything from rotten food to dead animals there and the smell is unbearable. Linda adds that it is shameful that residents think it’s fine to continue living like this. She would like to do something to help before it becomes unmanageable “Although it won’t be easy, I would like to start a project that aims to promote recycling and discourage dumping,” she said.

“I aim to find a few volunteers to place glass, plastic, cardboard and papers in separate rubbish bags; this will teach residents that waste material can be converted into a source of income.”
However, for now, Linda’s idea is still in the pipeline, and she hopes the municipality will come on board. “I have reported the site a few times, but I haven’t heard anything back, not even a false promise,” she said.
The Herald asked the municipality for comment but had received none by the time of print.
