What to do when heavy rainfall occurs

JB Marks municipal spokesperson, Jeanette Tshite, stated that Disaster Management urges residents to “take warning messages of heavy rainfalls from the South African Weather Service very seriously.”

Potchefstroom has been experiencing heavy rain fall since the flood in November and with more rain forecast for December, it is important to know what to do when isolated flooding occurs in low-lying areas.

The JB Marks Municipality’s Disaster Management Centre has reaffirmed that it will continue to monitor the situation (if flooding arises) and ensure the safety of residents.

JB Marks municipal spokesperson, Jeanette Tshite, stated that Disaster Management urges residents to “take warning messages of heavy rainfalls from the South African Weather Service “very seriously”.

Motorists and residents are requested to take the necessary safety precautions and take note of the following:

 Heavy rain can result in dangerous flooding, do not cross any flooded bridge or culvert

 15 centimetres of moving water can knock a person down

 70 centimetres of moving water will sweep a vehicle away
