NSFAS owes the NWU R 480 million

The NWU will make payments of these student allowances to more than 23 000 students from internal cash flow as NSFAS still owes the NWU an amount of R 480 million.

The North-West University has finally managed to finalise an agreement with NSFAS today (Friday, 19 January) on the reconciliation of allowances of 23 386 NSFAS students for 2023.

The NWU though will make payment of these allowances from internal cash flow as NSFAS still owes the NWU an amount of R 480 million.

NWU spokesperson, Louis Jacobs, confirmed that NSFAS owes the university R 372 million for 2023 alone, as well as a further R 108 million for previous years of outstanding funds.

The NWU released a statement on Wednesday 17 January emphasising that they have been doing everything in their power to resolve the issue of NSFAS payments.

“The principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka is the chair of a special task team introduced by the Minister in the second week of January 2024 to work with NSFAS and the DHET representatives and try and get NSFAS issues resolved. The NWU is actively involved in the sector to try and assist all the students and institutions and get outstanding matters resolved. ”

The NWU also stated that there is a group of 282 students whose unpaid allowances are not yet resolved between the NWU and NSFAS.

“We remain committed to actively engage with NSFAS in the best interest of our students towards a smooth and transparent financial assistance experience for all our students.”

*The Herald sent an enquiry to NSFAS for comment on the matter, but have not received a response yet.
